This course covers practical methods for performing process hazard analyses (PHAs) of systems, procedures, hazard and operability (HAZOP) and what-if/checklist techniques that will address regulatory requirements. The course will present an overview of PHA techniques and then focus on the hazard and operability (HAZOP) technique. It will provide an overall framework on preparing for, participating in, documenting and following up on PHAs. Participants will learn how to select study sections, apply the HAZOP deviation matrix, risk-rank scenarios and recommend practical and cost-effective mitigating measures. In addition, the course will address the logistics of conducting a PHA, how to develop a schedule, how to select the proper team size and composition, and how to reach consensus on hazard scenarios through involvement of all members of the PHA team. If there is no way of either removing or reducing risks to the individual, personal protective equipment should be provided.

The PPE at work regulations clearly state that providing personal protective equipment should only be a “last resort”. This course covers the general requirements of OSHA’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Standard. Topics include how to perform workplace hazard assessments, proper selection of PPE and training requirements.
